I have been raising sheep my whole life but I started a flushing program three years ago. I have increased the number of lambs hitting the ground by 23%. Flushing cost me about $3.40 per ewe last fall and at today's lamb prices, the return is huge.

New Producers to Industry

ASI is encouraging people to get in the sheep businessOne goal of the Let’s Grow campaign is to introduce new producers to the opportunities of the sheep industry, whether they are new to agriculture, or just adding sheep to their business enterprise. ASI is developing a training program to teach new producers about the production of safe and wholesome food and fiber, the well being of sheep, general farm and food safety and the concepts of sustainable agriculture. Beginning farmers and ranchers also need training in entrepreneurship and sound business practices, diversification and marketing and risk management to be successful. All of these skills will be provided through ASI’s training program and enhanced through mentorships with successful sheep producers. More information about the development of this training program will be posted as it becomes available.
